- Pick up a new Skill
Encourage Your kid to start up a new skill. Kids at a very early age show interest such as dancing or singing. Give your kid the right tutor to teach them to develop & find out if they are good in ballet or theatre etc.Have the patience to see them fail multiple times and don’t let them doubt their abilities. It might seem at first as if your kid is not as great in a particular skill, but it might just need some time to get the hang of it and you will never even realise that they were actually born for it.
- Winning is not as important as participation
Now, we adults do have the tendency to win and at times it might feel like the only option for us but it is so important for the kids to never feel this way in their growing years. It is a natural human tendency to become competent or feel like winning is everything but as parents & guardian, it falls on our shoulders to help them see how significant of an achievement it is to give a shot at something they like. And that if someone like something there is no necessity to fixate on winning but enjoy the whole experience and you are proud of them regardless of the results.
- What they love, let them decide
Your kid, though small is mighty. He /she knows what they want and if they want to pursuit something that you would never dream of becomes a dilemma. For example – You aren’t a great fan of art and might think it lacks a future and you would rather have your kid pick up a habit of liking your favourite subject and become a science geek. There is absolutely everything wrong with your thought process here. You will never find out the gem that your kid is capable of producing unless you give him/her a chance to explore without any hesitations. They require your one hundred per cent support in such choices.
- Schedule the Practice
You might try your best to make your kid follow your rules in terms of practising their skills.
Despite your best effort, if they feel passionate about something they might not listen to you and even sneak out to do it anyways. You as a parent, need to deliver the message to them that such practices might have a negative impact as well and to come with amazing ideas and get best results discipline is the key.
- Set Goals on Accruals
It’s true that your kid can achieve anything that they have set their minds on. Hence, it might become a pressure to them to achieve something all at once. For example, reciting a whole musical piece in one day. They generally will feel the anxiety to set such goals for themselves. But, take a load off their shoulders a bit and set smaller and incremental goals for a period of 2 days or so. Set a target of one day and follow the pattern likewise to divide the load.
- Introducing them to the gift of music
Music saves souls.
For your kid, it might just be that soothing stability they require. Take them to various musical performances, concerts and shows. Help them explore what they like. There are so many options that they might just choose many. Teaching them music will actually help them see the importance of practice.
- Practise isn’t Obligation
As parents, we have the tendency to reward kids for studying or practising etc. This habit will make them do a particular task out of out of obligation. Instead, introduce fun elements during your child’s practice session. For example, If your kid doesn’t want a guitar lesson today and rather have played outside, have the interest to sit and make up a new tune just diverging a little bit from the practise session. Maybe you and your kid will come up with a catchy tune.
- Always Encourage & Motivate
Be the light & positive force they seek in you. If you show your frustration, they will channel that exactly and no one gains from that. Negative motivation doesn’t work for kids. As it might for adults in achieving something beyond. In the case of kids, they need constant care, support and encouraging positive words.
- Who is the Right teacher for your kid
With so many options to choose from, you must take out time to inspect if your kid has the right teacher and if he/she is able to connect and understand your kid’s needs. There is always a right teacher and you just need to find them.
- Outdoor activities to keep them active
Besides keeping them, healthy and strong a sports activity teaches them team building & time management. It keeps their mind engaged and increases focus & strength. Believe it or not, it does build character at a very young age. It will teach your kid the importance of team.
