3D Modeling can be done by using several outstanding softwares available in the market at present.Few are mentioned below ,
Maya :This is the 3D graphic animation tool that runs on windows , macos and linux .We at Videogyan studios use this very tool for departments of work ranging from 3D modelling , rigging , texturing , layout ,lighting and animation .
Mudbox :Mudbox’s primary application digital sculpting, texture painting, and displacement and normal map creation, also used as a design tool.
Z-Brush :This digital sculpting tool gives you a package to design ,3D modeling ,texturing and painting .
It has an ability to create high resolution ,reaching up to 40 million polygons.
The concept artist creates a 2D art which comprises of a front and a back angle , created with the help of photoshop.
The types of object designed by the concept artist and received by the 3d modeller is as follows :
Organic Model : This type of model comprises of anything that has life. In other words living things. For E.g ,Human ,Dog , bird etc .
Inorganic Model : These type of models include Non -living things. The background objects ,e.g, Floor,street,pathway,trees,sky,mountains etc. And the Props ,e.g, Cup,Glass,Mug,Car,frame,ball etc.
The 3d model is created on Maya software where in mesh flow with loops is embedded .In mesh flow , each square is called as a polygon.If loops are provided it is certainly helpful to rig .
Mesh Flow :
It is then passed on to Rigging artists to work on the controllers and skinning of the 3D model.
Once the Rigging details are provided ,it is then delivered to 3D modeller again to work on the details and blend shapes.
Blend shapes are nothing but to give details of the expressions on the face.
In General, 20 expressions are given to the organic model.
Point to note here is Blend shapes are only required for Organic model as it is depicted as a living thing and not to the non-living inorganic objects.
The expressions given in blend shapes procedure is further classified into detailing . For E.g, Eyebrows movement , fine lines movement on the forehead ,blowout.For the characters to be able to talk or to depict that they are talking about a specific set of alphabet is embedded for the lip movement .Those are ,A,E,F V,M,O,U .
Once the Blend shapes are over , it is again provided to rigging to provide controllers _______________________________________________
A Different Approach :
Modelling, This is the fundamental module in creating 3-Dimensional objects in virtual space. A very important to establish a perfect 3D model, This will analyse the depth and detail of each corner or areas of such models. Modelling will determine the complexity of the assets such as creating Backgrounds, Characters and Props. This is a base for any 3D process which will decide the quality and details.
Sculpting, As the word “Sculpting” means carving or other shaping technique same as mud and clay sculpting where details of 3D model will be enhanced and to give more clarity and detail to the particular area or model. This process will determine the quality of the model and can take any decision based on this module.
Methods and Category
Nurbs Model, Nurbs models have highly optimised smoothness and less complexity but this is not the regular practice with most of the studios. The only studio that contains Nurbs model is Pixar Animation Studio apart from there are very few studios that apply this method.
Polygon Model, Polygon modelling is commonly used all over the world from feature films to 3D animation. This modelling requires a proper steps and rules to complete a model. Polygon models has to be created in terms of reality. Where most of the artists are proficient in this type of modelling in the world. And in Videogyan Studios we use the same methods and rules to create our 3D models.
Organic Model, As the term say, Organic means derived from living matter. Any living object in the universe will come under Organic Model. This process requires lot of creativity and talent to produce humanoid characters or unique alien type. Organic models are different as creativity and imagination are above and beyond to create such stylized assets.
Inorganic Model, Any non-living objects comes under the Inorganic Model, Such as Mountains, Valleys, House, Cities, Vehicles, Kitchen Cutlery and more. Creating a vast environment has become a spectacular from a decade. This aspect made movie making an another advantage that any universe can be created in a virtual space and match it to the real life. We see mesmerizing visuals that surprises the spectators.
Topology & Geometry, These are one of the main aspects of any model created in 3D virtual space. A condition of topology and geometry makes the further process. These conditions has to be maintained precise as UV mapping, Rigging and Skinning will be good and as well as animation. A proper proportion makes an asset looks beautiful and attractive.
Topology, Any shape which changes shape or size or figure and has continuous relation between one polygon(nurbs) or more. So there has to be a method to build a model. Every model cannot have the same or cannot be done in the same way. With respect to the artwork and concept have to test some technical skills to achieve a topology in 3D model.
Geometry, This is a fundamental property of a 3D model and its concerned with properties, relation of points, lines, surfaces, solids or any other form. Every Organic or Inorganic model will not be having the same form or property. Each object in this universe has different shapes and surfaces. Human skin and Crocodile skin is different when it comes to surface. Turtle shell is something unique. So each living and nonliving has different sets of significance.
3D Morphing , This term commonly known as Blend-shapes or Morph target animation. Expression or additional movement in the model can be done with Morphing. To do facial expression and small muscle can be done with this method. An automated facial expressions like smiling, angry, sad and surprised will be having switch with values from 0 to 1. Where the amount facial expression can be used with respect to animation requirement. In the movie Kung Fu Panda, Panda had more than 800 facial morphs to showcase a stylized and attractive expression. Normally vowels or each alphabet mouth shapes will be created for speech animation.
Further Process, We have to implement all these aspects to make perfect 3D model. So the next process UV, Rigging and Skinning will be good and the model will also be having beauty. A perfect asset should have a realistic geometry reference and topology guide. This process is beginning and utmost important, Where most of the studios fail to prove such and continue to thrive doing better and best in time. Overall modelling a key for revolution in 3D industry where based on this every program and tool is inspired and innovated.
